Creating Inclusive Spaces for Table Top Games: The IVM Fellowship

Building inclusive community for tabletop games has taken a long time. There have also been many barriers. A major one for many people is the money required to start and continue making content and distribute it. That’s why a group of creators came together and crafted the Inside Voices Media Fellowship.

This program is comprehensive. Not only will you be receiving funds to help realize your project, but the folks that founded the program will also be assisting by mentoring you as you work on realizing your initial goals.

The IVM Fellowship is intended for first-time media producers in whatever medium they find most interesting, be it written work, a podcast, or a YouTube channel, or any other creative media.  We will be offering mentorship and support along the way as they get their work up and running with the goal of them joining the Inside Voices Family. The process will be anonymous, and we are not asking for any samples of work in order to avoid any bias towards previous experience. We’re open to board gamers, RPG players, miniature wargamers, painters, and more! If it’s tabletop related, we’re interested.

New Things Coming for PanopLit

In an effort to elevate as many voices in the RPG community as possible, PanopLit will begin accepting submissions (paid!) for short form essays (around 500 words), lists, and reviews. I will also be accepting write ups by creators of their adventures, games, or other RPG-centered products.

As part of this effort, the website will be undergoing a face lift. Please bear with us while we redesign and get ready to accept submissions! Submissions will open February 1st, and remain open unless we are overrun with articles.

PanopLit is currently paid out of pocket, so advertising options and donation pages will appear soon, as well, to support our content creators.

Current Opportunities

Recently, I was speaking to a friend about how to “break in” to freelance writing, which naturally led to writing for RPG/tabletop games. I’m not an expert on the latter subject, but I know a lot of writers who are.

One thing you can do is get your name out there! Start with what you know: start by writing about games! While primarily focused on video games, FemHype offers some of the best and most inclusive criticism on the web! If you’re a female or non binary identifying gamer, you can pitch to them here: https://femhype.com/submissions/

Another way to get yourself known is to write in the genre you want to create games or adventures in. There are lots of anthologies and short story magazines around to, but Yes Poetry recently announced they will be accepting short stories, the weirder the better.

For the more experienced, or those looking to dive right in, Tabletop Gaming News also hosts an up to date job board.

Finally, I Need Diverse Games has posted their 2018 scholarship program. The submission period ends December 14th, 2017. 25 passes to the 2018 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco will be awarded to the lucky recipients!
